BIO

Short Bio

Hallowtribe is a "Defiantly Optimistic Musical Experience" by John Justus, inspired by '60s Pop, '00s Alternative, and Soul. John Justus is an international singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and ex-therapist, currently based in Milwaukee, WI.

Band Promo Bio

Playing with the infectious energy of stadium rockers like the Killers and the heart and introspection of '00s alt-pop bands (think early Coldplay or the Fray), Hallowtribe founder and frontman John Justus brings an engaging and “defiantly optimistic” musical experience to every live performance.

During the show, Hallowtribe welcomes the audience to co-create songs on the spot and John dances through the crowd, guitar in hand. Driving rhythms provide a strong foundation for passionate vocals and genuine ear-worms. These Milwaukee rockers aim to bring us all a little closer together and, by the end of the show, you might just feel like part of the Hallowtribe.

In its debut year, Hallowtribe has commanded the stages of legendary Linneman's Riverwest Inn, twice, and of several other Milwaukee alt-rock staples; Cactus Club (with SpaceFace), Shank Hall, Anodyne Coffee, Circle-A-Cafe, and Bremen Cafe, even taking a jaunt or two down to Chicagoland to play at T'Woods and the Gallery Cabaret. When Hallowtribe is off duty, John Justus hones his live chops performing with several other Milwaukee bands, racking up 47 shows from Wisconsin to Maine in 2022.

Watch for Hallowtribe's debut EP, set to be released April 2023.

Extended Bio/Story of the Project

Hi! I'm John Justus, the creator, singer and producer of Hallowtribe! This is what I do and why I do it...

The COVID-19 pandemic changed my perspective on what's truly important in life. I'm so grateful I found songwriting- it has been a welcome method for processing old wounds and insecurities and handling the fallout of the pandemic, including the fresh challenge of life after a divorce. After almost ten years of daydreaming and hinting at it, I finally left my career as a therapist to pursue music full-time.

In April 2021, I played a handful of open mics, with my own songs for the first time, and it felt so good. I had so many friends and family supporting my new direction and dreams- started growing my hair out and exploring what it meant to be me- and then I sold everything and tried to move back to my birthplace- Australia. I thought I would be gone forever. I had planned to stay with some family, work on my first album, then launch a music career at the end of the year from there. COVID restrictions had other plans and I found myself back in Milwaukee a month later, with almost no possessions.

So I jumped feet- first into the music scene here and created Hallowtribe to act both as my musical outlet and as a vehicle for re-learning how to connect to myself and everyone around me. I debuted the full band experience in December 2021, to positive reception, and I will continue playing as often as I can, either with a rotating lineup or as a solo project, whichever the fates allow, because now now that I've tasted it, I just can't get enough. There's nothing quite like bringing these songs to life in a room full of brand new friends.

Hallowtribe, to me, means "Transcend Together" and acts both as a band name and as a personal mantra: to bring people together and promote each-other's growth. That's all I really want out of music- to make some good tunes and connect with some good people. I strive to help build a more unified community and I and Hallowtribe welcome all people to come and feel comfortable at shows- I actively resist and denounce any violence or hatred towards any member of the extended Hallowtribe family and fans. I hope you find a place to be yourself here, and some good music to boot.

Thanks for listening- John Justus
